River Update

After much waiting the rain finally came and so did the salmon with almost 30 fish being caught in two days.

Local angler Chris Izod had four fish, the biggest weighing in at 14lbs. Another local angler Rodger Fletcher had four fish from the Brewery Pool in the space of 20 minutes and Dougie Welsh also had two fish, plus one from the Penkiln Burn.

The river is full of fresh fish at the moment and the club members are out in force. With more rain forecast, we should be in for a good run of fish.

The Ghyll, Brewery and Doctors Pools are the places to fish with the majority of fish being taken in these pools.

July 2005

July Competition Results

The results from the seventh association competition on 10th July - The DG Guns & Albert Emerson Memorial Trophy held at Loch Ochiltree (Fly) were as follows:-

1st - M. McKie
2nd - B. Blackley

Only two fish were caught during this competition at Loch Ochiltree. It was a very hard nights fishing and unfortunately there was no scales to weigh the fish.

River Update

Summer has arrived at last and the River Cree is very low as a result of the recent good weather. There are a few diehards out at night for the sea trout which are still being caught in decent numbers. The grilse have yet to make an appearence, although they should come when the water level on the river rises.

Lochs Update

Loch Dee is fishing very well and there are some great hatches of sedges. It has been fishing especially well at night and some decent fish have been caught. The midges are a nightmare on this loch and would drive a sane man to insanity. They are renowned for waiting till you come off the loch and then ambushing you at the car. All the jungle formula in the world won't help!

The association have also stepped up bailiff patrols on all the association waters. Particular attention is being paid to the patrolling of Loch Dee where poaching has been a problem for a while. The association is taking this problem very serious and any person caught poaching will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.

June Competition Results

The results from the sixth association competition on 12th June - The Wylie Cup held at Loch Kirriereoch (Bait) were as follows:-

The results from the first jun/juv association competition on 12th June - The Nelson Cup held at Loch Kirriereoch (Bait) were as follows:-

Junior Results

1st - M. Kane
2nd - T. Crosbie

Juvenile Results

1st - J. Campbell

River Update

The beginning of June has saw good numbers of sea trout getting caught on the river. The most productive pools on the river have been the Ghyll Pool and the Brewery Pool. These are most definately the places to be fishing when the sun goes down. The local choice of flies seems to be the 'Teal, Blue & Silver' and the 'Dunkeld' as these are the ones that seem to be taking the fish. The run of grilse should be making an appearance soon if we get some heavy rain.

*** Special Announcement ***

The association would like to give a special mention and offer their congratulations to Calum Crosbie who was part of the successful Scotland team that won the home international competition in England.

River Update

The River has been quite quiet so far, although the runs of sea trout are expected soon. Good sized fish in good numbers have been caught in recent years and hopefully this season will prove to be no different.

Announcement

The association is holding an open night in the McMillan Hall on 20th April with Frontier Holidays providing a film show. There will be a raffle and refreshments will be provided. Costs £3.00 payable at the door on entry.

March 2005

This month saw the River Cree making the Border TV news. The story surrounds the weir at Cree Bridge and fears that it's disappearing could undermine the town's bridge which is 50 yards upstream, wrecking riverside flood defences. Holes in the weir are clearly visible near the car park wall at the clock tower, but it is understood erosion under the weir is worst next to the sluice, where water flow is fastest.

Billy Brown, secretary of Newton Stewart Angling Association said: “The weir’s really badly undermined - that’s why it is there, as a flood prevention scheme for the bridge. It has definitely got worse since last year and the only thing that’s holding it together is the keystone. If the weir goes, then it will cause an awful lot of damage below it - Newton Stewart is on a flood plain, after all.”

A council spokesperson said: “We are currently investigating the situation with the Weir at Newton Stewart.”

March Competition Results

The results from the first association competition on 20th March - The Wilson Cup held at Fyntallch Loch (Fly) were as follows:-

1st - B. Blackley
2nd - C. Crosbie
3rd - R. Crosbie

Heaviest fish of the competition went to B. Park.

Lochs Update

The lochs are starting to fish well and there are some good hatches of olives on Loch Ochiltree and Fyntalloch Loch. Loch Kirriereoch is doing well with small black flies. It's still a bit early in the season for Loch Dee to produce it's magic.

Clatteringshaws Loch has started to be drained and some local anglers have taken advantage of this situation to collect a few free lures and wire traces thanks to the low water.
