August 2006
August Competition Results
Due to low water conditions, the Galloway Guns & Tackle competition was not fished.
The results from the twelfth association competition on 6th August - The Creebridge Cup held at Loch Dee (Fly) were as follows:-
1st – W. McHarg
There were no runners up as no other fish were caught.
River Update
Despite the river being quiet for the first two weeks of August, the rain eventually came and filled the river. Club members were out in force with reports of 40 – 50 salmon/grilse being caught in one day and good numbers daily after that. The top methods seemed to be the ‘Flying C’ and worming. Every pool on the river was producing good numbers of fish.
Most fish were averaging between 5lbs and 10lbs with the biggest being around 14lbs.
Lochs Update
With all the warm weather and low water at the beginning of August, the lochs suffered slightly and no significant catches were reported. Hopefully this will change as we move into the month of September and temperatures start to decrease.
July 2006
July Competition Results
60th Anniversary celebrations continued on the 1st July 2006 as the association staged an open fly competition at Loch Ochiltree.
Overall, 33 anglers from Newton Stewart A.A., Stranraer & District A.A. and Dalbeattie A.A. caught 38 trout on what was a very difficult day due to strong winds and bright sunshine.
George McShane of NSAA triumphed as the adult winner, catching 4 fish for 8lb 6oz’s and more significantly, bagging himself a fantastic Sage fly rod as the winner. Below, Calum Crosbie presents winner George McShane with his prize.
In second place was D. Pride with 4 fish for 7lb 11oz’s and in third place, A. Johnstone with 3 fish for 7lb 7oz’s, both of whom received a fly reel and line for their valiant efforts.
The heaviest fish of the competition went to F. Marshall with a beauty of 3lb 15oz’s.
Rory Crosbie triumphed as the juvenile winner with 4 fish for 8lb 3oz’s (putting a lot of the adult members to shame) and won himself a fly rod in the process. Below, Rory being presented with his prize by proud father Calum Crosbie.
The juvenile runner up was C. Gibson with 2 fish for 3lb 6oz’s.
All brown trout landed were successfully returned alive to the loch.
The results from the ninth association competition on 9th July - The DG Guns & Albert Emerson Memorial Trophy held at Loch Ochiltree (Fly) were as follows:-
1st – C. Crosbie
2nd – A. McRobert
3rd – J. Galloway
River Update
Once again, the month of July was very quiet and the river was reduced to a trickle due to the good weather. Fortunately, the low water allowed the local council to carry out important repairs to the weir below Creebridge which became a bit of a concern last year.
Lochs Update
Water temperatures remained high throughout July and no significant catches were reported on the lochs.
June 2006
June Competition Results
The results from the sixth association competition on 11th June - The Wylie Cup held at Loch Kirriereoch (Bait) were as follows:-
1st - I. Muir
2nd - G. McShane
3rd - A. McLean
River Update
It was very quiet in the month of June and despite the river being very low early on, the rain did eventually come and a few sea trout were caught by the local anglers and visitors.
The River Cree has produced many fine sea trout in recent years and fish in the 6lb – 8lb are not uncommon. Pools like the Brewery, Doctors and the Ghyll are undoubtedly the most productive on the river with the latter probably being the best of the three. You have to be a competent wader to fish this pool effectively and due to the over hanging trees and steep embankments, spey casting really is the only option for the fly fisher.
Flies to try include the traditional favourites like the ‘Teal, Blue & Silver’, ‘Dunkeld’ and a local favourite, the Sinfoil Fry.
Lochs Update
Loch Ochiltree is fishing really well and good sized, hard fighting fish are being caught all over the loch. Loch Dee is also doing well and good sedge hatches continue to provide excellent sport with fish feeding frenzies. During these hatches, almost every cast will produce a fish. A major drawback though is that the midges are out in force, big time! If you plan on fishing Loch Dee, please take a midge net and some repellent. Details of the Development Plan for Loch Dee are available on the ‘Latest Club News’ section.
May 2006
May Competition Results
The results from the fourth association competition on 14th May - The Stroyan Cup held at Loch Dee (Fly) were as follows:-
1st - A. Johnstone (2 fish for 2lb 10oz's)
2nd - F. Marshall (2 fish for 2lb 2oz's)
3rd - R. Wilson (1 fish for 1lb 9oz's)
Heaviest fish of the competition went to R. Wilson with a beautiful brown trout of 1lb 9oz's.
Overall, a good number turned out for the fourth club competition on Loch Dee with 16 anglers landing a modest 6 trout on what was a very cold and wet day.
River Update
The river is quiet at the moment with only two known springers being caught to visiting rod anglers. The sea trout have yet to make an appearence despite the River Cree running at a good level recently. The weather during May has been really poor with rain and cold winds. There was even snow on the Merrick on the 29th May.
Lochs Update
The association has stocked all the lochs except Loch Dee. Loch Ochiltree has been stocked with brown trout along with rainbows. The committee have asked all anglers to please return any brown trout caught in an attempt to establish them properly in the loch.
There will be an open fly competition on the 1st July 2006 at Loch Ochiltree as part of the clubs 60th anniversary celebrations. More details will follow shortly.
April 2006
April Competition Results
The results from the second association competition on 9th April - The Robert McDowall Cup held at Loch Kirriereoch (Fly) were as follows:-
1st - J. Nichol
2nd - C. Crosbie
3rd - J. Galloway
The results from the third association competition on 30th April - The McCarlie Cup held at Loch Ochiltree (Fly) were as follows:-
1st - C. Crosbie (5 fish for 9lb 9oz's)
2nd - F. Marshall (3 fish for 6lb 7oz's)
3rd - J. Nichol (3 fish for 6lb 5oz's)
Heaviest fish of the competition went to F. Marshall with a beautiful rainbow trout of 3lb 5oz's.
Juvenile results as follows:-
1st - R. Crosbie (1 fish for 2lb 13oz's)
2nd - R. Kerr (1 fish for 1lb 14oz's)
Overall, a good number turned out for the third club competition on Loch Ochiltree with 17 anglers landing 19 trout on what was a cold day. There were good hatches of dark olives for most of the day with Calum Crosbie taking 5 fish all on the dry fly. Small goldheads and mini lures also fished well. With the next competition on Loch Dee on the 14th May,the weather will hopefully be a bit warmer.
It's all quiet on the River Cree at the moment but with the sea trout starting to enter the Cree about May time, sport should start to pick up and the Ghyll Pool should be the place to be.
March 2006
River Update
The River Cree produced it's first springer on 30th March and was caught by local angler, Gary Copeland (pictured below). The fish weighed in at 8lbs and was taken in the Doctors Pool on a Red & Gold Devon Minnow.

(Gary Copeland and his 8lb springer which is the first salmon of the season.)
This was soon matched by another angler, Rodger Fletcher who about an hour later caught a springer of 7lbs from the Brewery Pool on a Flying 'C'. Now that the salmon have decided to make an appearence, hopefully many more will be caught and some good sport will be had. Due to the fact that the River Cree is a spate river, it needs rain for the salmon to enter the river, and, when it rains in Newton Stewart it forgets to stop! The river is either too low or too high at the moment, but once the weather settles it should start fishing even better and we should see some good results.
Lochs Update
Good news so far in March as local angler Bill Bates caught a superb 9lb rainbow trout from Loch Ochiltree, the associations premier loch. The loch regularly produces fish in excess of 5lbs + and such a fine specimen this early in the season is a good sign of things to come.
March Competition Results
The results from the first association competition on 26th March - The Wilson Cup held at a wet and windy Fyntalloch Loch (Fly) were as follows:-
1st - I. Muir (4 fish for 6lb)
2nd - R. Wilson (3 fish for 4lb 15oz's)
3rd - A. Johnstone
The juvenile winner was R. Kerr with 4 fish for 5lb 7oz's.
Overall, 12 anglers took part in the competition and most fish were caught on lures fished slow and deep.
